The KotorArt organizing team announced today that the opening ceremony of the 2022 KotorArt festival is set for July 1. Traditionally, the first notes of this year’s program will be heard at the Market in front of the St. Tryphon Cathedral in Kotor Old Town. The first concert is called Montenegro and Europe: Music of Togetherness. The concept of the program represents an affirmation of the cultural ties between Montenegro and Europe, and another confirmation of the country’s belonging to a shared European cultural space.

The audience will hear famous works of classical repertoire from France and the Czech Republic, including the excerpts from two operas created during the 19th century in Paris and Prague, inspired by Montenegro, Montenegrins, and historical occasions of that time.

The concert program is the result of the work of a research unit established in 2020 within the Festival. The research unit is dedicated primarily to the study of European musical heritage and Montenegro as an inspiration, through the prism of culture and music. One of the first activities of this unit is the work on the reconstruction of the two operas that will be included in the program. The first one is the French opera “Les Montenegrins” (Montenegrins) premiered in 1849 in Paris, with the libretto of Gerard de Nerval, one of the most important French writers of the Romantic era, and music by Belgian composer Armand Limander. The second one is the opera “Chernohorc” (Montenegrins), premiered in Prague in 1881, by the Czech librettist Josef Veseli, for which the music was written by Karel Bendl. This opera won the second prize in the competition for the ceremonial opening of the National Theater in Prague in the same year.

In addition to excerpts from these operas, some well-known works of musical literature will be performed, such as opera arias and overtures from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet, an aria from the opera Rusalka by Antonina Dvorak, and the symphonic poem Vltava by Bejich Smetana. They will be performed by the Albanian National Opera and Ballet Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor maestro Mladen Tarbuk, soloist soprano Olivera Tičević, and tenor Ermin Ašćerić.

In addition to the music program, a short documentary about these operas, produced by the Radio Television of Montenegro, will be premiered.

The concert is supported by the Embassies of France and the Czech Republic, the French Cultural Center, and the Ministry of Culture of Albania.

This summer, the KotorArt International Festival is planned with extremely rich and diverse programs from July 1 to August 14, under the auspices of UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture and Media, and the Municipality of Kotor, with the support of the European Union, the Western Balkans Fund and numerous embassies.
